About taking pets to the US.
I'm moving in 3 years time and although I know it's a long time off my hamsters actually could live 4 1/2 years so I'm curious. Can you take hamsters/gerbils etc abroad with you when you move? What quarenteen checks do they have to have and how long are you seperated from them? You probably think I'm crazy but rehoming hamsters in this economy would prove to be quite difficult and I don't want to give them up if I can help it.
Thanks. |

Ok am I really that mad? Is it impossible to take them with me?

Re: About taking pets to the US.
The US doesn't automatically quarantine animals like the UK does. As long as the animal isn't prohibited and the shots are up to date, it's not a problem.
Check out: http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/...d.ctt/pets.pdf Rabbits, Guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, and other pet rodents: There are no CDC or USFWS restrictions or requirements on these animals if brought in as pets. You'll want to check with the airline before booking the ticket. |

Re: About taking pets to the US.
AFAIK, dogs and cats are the only pets allowed in cabin, so your hamsters would have to travel in the hold. You might want to talk to a specialist pet transportation company, several have been mentioned in similar threads.

If no airline will take them then maybe try taking boat. |

The smaller dwarf/Russian breeds live a shorter life span while, Siberians can live to 10 years of age |

Maybe the chipmunk was a certified therapy animal. :)
I didn't want to test it though... |

You could always ask Richard Gere. |

Surely by the time you get here, your hamsters and gerbils will be long gone?
You could always ask Richard Gere. Here's a little karma for you. |
Re: About taking pets to the US.
gerbils live 3-4 1/2 years. Robos live 4 years on average. So they would be old... the likely hood of all of them being around is unlikely but some of them could possibly be since I've had a syrian hamster (who live to about 2 1/2 years) lived 5 years. So it depends.
