Default Why an interview if I-90 used for renewal?

In general what are the reasons for the INS to see it fit to do a full
interview in case I-90 is used for renewal of a GC?

INS hasn't existed for a number of years now. In general, there is no interview when you renew your GC. If however, you use an I-90 to renew the GC when you should be using an I-751 to remove the conditions... well, that's a whole different animal.

Is this what happened to you? You got called in for an interview, after using I-90 to renew your green card?

No but it could happen as they say it (btw "it" being the USCIS and not the
INS I'm sorry) in their documentation, but without giving reasons or
examples when they elect to do so. I'd like to be prepared however (btw an
I-751-request does not apply in this case).

I'm sorry, I meant the USCIS

Fortunately that situation does not apply in this case, but I was just
wondering if you have been outside the US for the major part of the GC
duration, and you haven't fully taken care of having all the time a
stateside address, whether this might make the USCIS curious.

Well, why didn't you just ask this in the first place instead of having people guess what the issue is? Generally, unless you have maintained ongoing ties to the US, it's likely that your status as a PR will be considered abandoned... and you may no longer be eligible for a GC. Will USCIS be curious? Yes.

Compact questions attract more repliers than long-winded stories.
And I wasn't sure whether there were other circumstances too unknown to me
that tend the attract the attention of USCIS (ok ok I could have mentioned
that too).

I have posed my question in this newsgroup on behalf of a very busy friend
of mine who was rather cagey to me when I asked him details about his formal
place of residence in the US so I'm not sure whether apparent abandonment is
an issue. From two people I heard that the USCIS conducting an interview on
occasion of GC extension is rather the exception.
