Default What does the work stamp do???

I have a question about work authorization when crossing the border on a K-1. I called both the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel POE's to find out if they give work authorization when I cross the border. Both of them told me that the I-94 they stamp says "Work Authorized" but that I still have to go to my INS district office to get an EAD CARD and the social security office to get a social security card, in order to work.

My original understanding was that the stamp would allow me to work upon arrival, but now it seems like this stamp only allows me to apply for a work permit. Can anyone make sense of this? Has anyone here used one of these POE's before and actually gone through the process? Or if anyone has recieved "the stamp" from another POE, what did they tell you? Any help would be much appreciated.

the stamp is good enough to work with for the 90 days of its validity. You will need to apply for the one year EAD and hope that it is issued prior to the 90 day stamp expiring.

As for the social security card, just walk into the SSA office and apply as soon as you get here. You cannot work without a social security number.

Don't forget to bring you passport and birth certificate to the Social
Security Office. The i-94 form is enough to give you a SSN. It took the
office 6 days to grant me one :-)

Good luck... I wish I had a work stamp.

Just to make sure I understand what you are saying.....

I need to get my social security card in order to work. Once I get my social security card, I have 90 days (from my date of entry) with the stamp I recieved at the border. If I would like to work beyond those 90 days, I have to apply for a 1 year EAD card.

Do I have it right?

How long does it (usually) take to get the Social Security card?

Thanks again.

You have it right! As for time for Soc Sec card, like everything else in the wild and whacky world of Immigration...........it all depends. Different places.......different times. I am applying for mine tomorrow (Peoria, Illinois) so will keep you posted on progress.

Rete (or anyone for that matter),

I have a few questions for you. First, when did you apply/receive
your Social Security card? I read on the SS website that they now do
checks with INS prior to issuing cards...and this can take some time.
Second, can you work while your application is pending? Also, if you
do not receive your 1 year EAD within the 90 days, what recourse do
you have? Can you file for an extension of the 90 day one, or can you
continue working until you recieve the other?

Check this website:
http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/...?&p_faqid=1122

Thanks for any insight.

I arrived in the US on December 5 2002. My Social Security card arrived in the mail on December 14th (which was a bit of a shocker considering I was told it would take up to 6 months).

For info - POE Detroit - living in Illinois.
