What does CIS do?
I have a very basic question regarding the whole process of I-485
(marriage based)
What does USCIS does to the I-485 between the time the case is filed
and the interview is scheduled?
My question is :
Are they checking anything like -is the applicant (alien) legal in the
country and is is admissible or what?
I always wonder that

USCIS is one of the agencies tasked with abiding by the requirements of
immigration laws as promulgated by Congress. If you were employed with USCIS
would you not do what you are supposed to do as bound by duty to make sure
applicants for any immigration benefit are legal, qualified and admissible?
You don't expect them to break or ignore the laws just to make any
immigration benefit applicant happy, do you?
You really need to learn the relevant laws first and comprehend the function
of the agency before you ask questions like that.
