Visit visa to Green Card conversion.
Hi Kevin (and others),
I am a U.S Citizen and my mom is in U.S on a visitor visa and I wish
to file for her green card. Since, she is already here in states, can
I just file for the adjustment-of-status (I-485) directly? She is
almost 60 years old with multiple health problems. I would like to
avoid her going back to India and stay there for green card
processing, especially, since there is nobody at home to take care of
her.
Is the procedure for filing for her I-485 straightforward. or do you
suggest I get a lawyer? I don't want to spend money, If it's not too
complicated.
Thanks,
rtdl.

I haven't seen Kevin post here for ages (I assume you mean *that* Kevin, Kevin
Keane, who used to be a regular here)...

You need to file an I-130 and the I-485.
Both are pretty straightforward. But, be aware that you need to file an I-864
(affidavit of support) with the I-485, and that means you are responsible for
any government expense incurred for her, e.g., because of her health. She most
likely won't be able to get health insurance.
