Re: USCIS Fee Schedule Effective: July 30, 2007
Q. If an applicant files a Form I-485 to adjust status before the rule is effective, will he/she have to pay for future interim benefits?
A. Yes. An applicant for adjustment of status who applies before the fee rule becomes effective will continue to have to file separate applications with fees for employment and travel authorization. Those who file an adjustment of status application (Form I-485) after the new fee schedule is effective will not have to pay the additional fees for employment and travel authorization as these costs have been included in the new adjustment of status application fee.
So....the new I-485 fee INCLUDES the EAD and AP fee? Interesting!

Thanks for posting that. DH has been sitting on his N-400 app for over
6 months. I think this will spur him to get it done and sent off ASAP!

Re: USCIS Fee Schedule Effective: July 30, 2007
According to everyone including a good immigration lawyer, it won't make any difference in my situation since I don't meet any of the categories for "special treatment". It's "just" the FBI namecheck that is delaying things. On the last visit to the USCIS, they found my file and checked to make sure nothing had come in from the FBI and they sent off another request for a decision...

Doesn't matter if you are the spouse of a "native" born USC or a "naturalized" USC. The fee is the same.

Hey, they have to keep up with inflation. The fees only increased by
25% per year in the past decade

When you look at those fee increases, $3.00 for gas doesn't look so bad. I wonder if Congress will call for an investigation of Big Government price gouging. LOL

Re: USCIS Fee Schedule Effective: July 30, 2007
From the link above, this bears repeating here, I believe:

Q. You've raised fees before with the promise of improving service.
What's the difference between now and then?
Short answer: Nothing, we always say that we'll improve service, and
then we don't. But hey, we just increase the fees because we CAN.

Re: USCIS Fee Schedule Effective: July 30, 2007
Question: They always say they they raise the fees because those fees
are their source of financing.
Obviously, they managed to finance their operations in 1994 based on
the fees posted above.
What kind of cost went up so dramatically?
ok, let's go with a multiple choice:
- We now pay for services that have nothing to do with USCIS (so-
called war against so-called terrorists)
- The pay is just getting better and better for upper management
- We really try to improve our service: Everything is computerized ;
so we can find out that somebody in Texas will have an extra 5 min
available 1 week from now. As such, to increase efficiencies, we'll
mail him from Missouri (well, we didn't realize that it takes more
than 5 min to mail the damm thing) an application to process, we'll
send it thru express mail (cost: $24). And so, at no point in time we
have unused labor (sight) (not to mention the cost of the useless
computerized system)
are their source of financing.

Ah, lovely. An 88% increase for my work permit, and a 79% increase for my advance parole. I've just applied for my fifth EAD and AP; they must love repeat business like mine. It's a great system where people can be delayed indefinitely for no apparent reason and you still charge them for the "privilege". From: http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedoc...dule052907.pdf
I 485 ; If 79 or older: $ 930
From:
http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/usc...0045f3d6a1RCRD
In all fee waiver requests applicants are required to demonstrate an
"inability to pay." In determining "inability to pay," USCIS Officers
may consider the following situations and criteria regarding the
applicant:
- Whether the individual is elderly (age 65 and over, at the time the
fee request is submitted).
My guess is that a bunch of those "79 or older" are also "65 and
over". But that's just me
