Hi , My fiancee has been here on his K1 for two weeks and we want to apply for his SSN. He got a temporary EAD stamp on his I94 at JFK. Do we check authorised to work on the form even though the EAD is temporary? Also will he definately be in the system after two weeks? Do we bring anything besides his passport and birth certificate with us? Thanks

Yes, check authorized to work. Yes, he should be in the system by now. Bring his passport with the K-1 visa and I-94 inside. If you've gotten married already, it's best not to mention that, it just confuses them. Not sure if he'll even need his birth certificate, but bring it just in case.

You don't need to mention the EAD stamp either. All K-1 are authorised to work according to SS. As Rene says, just show them the passport and the visa, don't mention marriage or anything else, and he'll be fine.

(btw the stamp didn't give him the authority to work, it just gave him something to show employers to PROVE he had the authority to work)

Hi , We went to the social security office today. Filled in the form. Got the ticket to be called to the window. Brought his birth cert, Passport and UK liscence. They only needed the passort with the visa. The person at the window examined it very carefully. Typed the info on the computer. Gave us a letter that said he'll recieve his card in two weeks. It took about 20 minutes total.Surprising since this was NYC but we got to the office about half an hour after it opened. 4 days till the wedding.

Hi:

Do not worry if the card has a restriction noting "not valid for employment without DHS permission" or some such. For your purposes that is meaningless.

Hi. My husband got his ss card on Friday. It took only 8 days which I am amazed at. It says "valid for work only with DHS authorization" We are meeting with my attorney next week to fill out all the forms for his AOS. When his AOS gets approved do we then apply for a replacement card that doesn't say that? It mentions on the back that he needs to show that he is work authorised when applying for work. Thanks

Yes, when his AOS is approved and he has his green card, he should go back to the SS office and have them issue a new card without the legend.
