Default Residency requirements for work

Hi,

I've got a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. I returned to the UK from Japan about a year ago, but in order to progress in my current job I need a certain level of security clearance. This clearance requires either 5 years residency or a police clearance certificate (aka CRB check) from the country I lived in.

Unfortunately, Japan is quite rigid about handing these things out, and will only do it for a few specific reasons (which doesnt include security clearance). One of their approved reasons is for supporting visa applications, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any visa applications that would require this kind of criminal record check. I could then use this as an excuse to get hold of the certificate for work. I hope.

Any ideas much appreciated,
