Default Region free DVD *and* Bluray player?

DH wants to get a Bluray player that is also region free for DVDs. I know nothing about bluray players. (He says bluray doesn't have regions.) Initial online searches suggest we can get one for about $300 - for that price it'd be cheaper to get a separate bluray player and region free dvd player!

Does anyone have recommendations for a relatively inexpensive bluray player that is either region free for DVDs or can be unlocked to play any region DVDs?

Blu-Ray does have regions

Not all studios add region-coding to the blu-ray discs though, and even when the disc says it is for region A (for example), that doesn't necessarily mean that it is locked One way to check is the reviews on blu-ray.com

Aha, excellent, thanks. Yes I had seen references to "ABC players" and wondered what that was about.

Right now I'm leaning toward getting two devices, each for under $75...makes more sense than one device for $250+...

Get separates....Blu Ray you pretty much don't have to worry about the regions.

DVD players cost next to nothing and easy to get codes to make most regionless online.

Thanks guys. We've ordered a region free Pioneer DV-220K-V dvd player off Amazon today and will probably pick up a cheap bluray player at a later date.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

If it isn't on there, it's probably not doable, or pretty fiddly.

If the dvd is a drive on a computer, there's software options which is pretty easy like - http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm which is now free.

Usually if they aren't on that site they aren't on others, but you could also try:

http://www.dvdhacks.co.uk/hacksearch...ch.asp?player=

and http://www.dvd365.net/?hacks/hacklist.htm

- also, model numbers change ever so minutely sometimes so that if there's a hack for a model with a very similar number it might work on yours. Interestingly, it's often the cheaper players that are more likely to have a multi-region hack.
