Default Non Immigrant Visa

My husband is not eligible for a green card. To make a long story short, we live in Canada even though myself and daughters are US citizens. My husband has to apply for the non immigrant visa waiver of inadmissibilty to be allowed to visit the US. His current one expires next year. My question is if he applies several months before his current one expires, will he still be able to travel on that one or will they cancel it while his new one is being reviewed?

I will leave it to a US expert but they shouldn't cancel it while valid even though a new application has been submitted.

Visas remain valid until they expire or are specifically revoked (getting let go or quitting when on job-specific visa, certain convictions, etc.). It cannot be cancelled by applying for a replacement.

I would apply well in advance, they are not quick and who knows how long they will take now.
