Default Need some advise on State JoB vs Private College Job

Hi,

I need some advise to make a decision on what job to choose. I am being
offered a state job and also at the same I got another offer from a private
college, Salary offered from the private colleg is much more better than
the state one but because of all these H1-B quota's and random selection
process I'm bit reluctant to go with the private college.

I'm a grduate student and at the moment I'm on my CPT. How does H1 works
with state jobs. When can the employer file the petition and how long would
it take to get approved. If I go with the private college I have to wait
till 2008 april to file and wait to get selected from the random process.

So what you opinion or advise on this matter.

Thank you
excited

State jobs usually have better benefits in the long-run. My ex worked for state university then in private sector. I worked in private sector first, but now have a state job. Sorry, I don't know about the visa questions.

I worked in two state schools and the working conditions and benefits were just fine. Health care was free at both, retirement (10% salary) was paid by the employer at both. You'll never be rich working at a state school but depending on where you work, you can be well off.

Bear in mind that by definition, state schools are funded primarily by the state. Some states (NC, for example) have a great state school system, well-funded. Others not so much. I have colleagues working in MI and FL who are always complaining about the lack of funding for certain things (the one in FL can't make LD phone calls from work, for example).

Re: visas, if I were you I'd go with the sure thing. I didn't realize that private schools had to go through the H1B quota system. You should also ask them what assistance they will give you with visa applications, green card, etc. Some schools either have an expereinced person at the International Office who will help you through the process, or will pay for attorney fees. Others expect you to fund attorney fees.
