Medical Card
Hello,
My wife is pregnant with our first kid, and right now she is only a
conditional permanent resident. Does anyone have experience in getting
a medical card under this status? My wife is worried that we could
have problems with the INS because of the affidavit of support my
mother and I signed showing we would support her. Does anyone know if
this is the case or not?Thank you.

Re: Medical Card
Here is my knowledge on this.As long as you are married and your wife
has a SSN, you could enroll her in a medical plan.
As with my company, the birth of the child is covered as long as your
wife was enrolled 30 days or more prior to the birth.

Re: Medical Card
It sounds like they are referring to a government medical assistance
card.
The OP is correct in thinking this might be an issue with INS.

Your wife is not eligible for means-tested government assistance,
however the child, as a US citizen, will be. here is INS info on what is
means-tested and what is not means-tested:
http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/pu...ets/affaqa.htm
(pan down the page to the heading for means-tested benefits)

Re: Medical Card
If that is the case, yes it will be considered a public charge.I suggest
you find a job that offers medical coverage for you and your
wife..Otherwise,you may run into difficulties with the US Gov.
financially.

She should look into clinics at the local hospital for the services of a OBGYN and she can also check with some of the city and/or women's groups for information on low cost medical care for the pregnancy. Arrangements can be made for the payment of the bill at the hospital in installments.
This is a tough situation and one only has to read the posts from another NG regular who is contemplating bankruptcy because of the high hospital and medical costs resulting from his wife's pregnancy without medical coverage.

Re: Medical Card
I doubt any new insurance would cover a pre-existing pregnancy that
wasn't covered under any insurance prior.
