Default Maximum stay on L2

Out of curiosity, how long can someone stay on a L2 Visa? And what is the next step.
Can they apply for a green card before the L2 runs out?

The L2 visa holder can stay as long as the primary L1 person can. The L2 is attached
to the L1's green card petition.

An L-2 can stay as long as the spouse has an L-1 visa. An additional restriction is
that you cannot spend more than five, six or seven years (depending on which status
you have last) in any L or H status. That is, if you, for example, came to the US as
an H-1B and after three years married an L-1B who just arrived in the US, you would
only have two years left as an L-2, even though your spouse could stay for three
years beyond that.

You can get a Green Card only if your spouse gets one.

Pretty complicated, huh?
