They also say they want my spouse birth certificate with translation
in English. I have until March to sent it in.

How do I go about translation my wife's birth certificate in English?

Any reputable translation agency can supply you with translation of your
wife's birth certificate. You cannot do it yourself. Be sure they also
give you a certification of translation.

I translated my wife's birth certificate myself and they didn't question
it at all (for K1 visa). I also included a short declaration that I am
competent to translate it and signed that. Apparently that was good
enough.

Find a translator who can translate it for you, and can provide a letter
that he/she is a translator. Some embassies or consulates can do it for you,
for instance the Myan Mar embassy can supply a document with translation and
a statement that this is a real birth certificate.

I had some of my documents translated by a court translator. He charged me a fee and gave me three copies. He also placed an official seal on the back with his signature.

I translated my wife's documents myself. I did attach an appropriate
note stating that I was competent to do so. When we went for her
adjustment interview, I brought along my transcripts to show my
academic training in the subject, but it never came up.

I don't know if someone else has received different instructions, but
this was our experience.

I have seen many certified translations done by the applicant himself which
were successfully filed with INS and consular posts. Anyone who knows both
languages can certify a translation. The person does not have to be a
professional translator.

I think that if the translation is indeed accurate, and it looks quite neat
(typed without error), and there is no other red flag in the application to
signal possible fraud, this kind of translation is just fine. It may look
better for a person other than the applicant to do the translation, but this
could be a friend who is familiar with both languages.

My husband's best friend who was visitng from Germany did ours. He was fluent in English and German so he translated it and signed a documnet saying he was able to understand and translate.

I know several other people who did their own, I think it is allowed.
Plus one less thing you have to pay for if you know someone fluent in both languages.

and languages, and that the above/attached document is
an accurate translation of the document attached entitled

Looks like the only requirements are that the translator is
fluent(conversant) in both languages.

my wife is from south korea and we got a US-greencard.
we needed a translation of her birth certificate.
the korean conulate didn't translate all of the document and the us embassy
refused it. she did it herself (as told my a clerk) and it was accepted.

Out of the hundreds of petitions I've prepared, never did we allow the
petitioner/beneficiary to do their own translation. It just eliminates the
whole issue of fraud or conflict and keeps red flags at a minimum. I'm
really glad to hear that people have done their own with no problems. (
Possibly it's just Nebraska being a pain, or our District Office). The
statute doesn't clarify who must do it, but as a matter of caution, clients
are always told to have a friend fluent in both languages or agency prepare
the document.
