I-485 and CP, revised

Sorry for reposting my question. I have obtained some information but would like to
make sure I got it right.
Here's my original question:
*****************
Suppose I am ready to file I-485, on the basis of the approved employment-based
I-140, but my family members (spouse, child) have been and still are abroad for a
longterm period. Could they do the CP if and when my own I-485 is approved and then
"follow to join"?
I understand that is at least tricky. But I'd like to know if it's possible at all.
*****************
Here's now the information I got from a layperson:
Yes, it's possible. I just need to file my own I-485 first, get it approved, and
then file I-824 with the INS asking to forward a copy of my approved I-485 to the
relevant U.S. consulate. That would allow my family members to start CP and then
"follow to join."
*****************
Does that sound right? If so, are there any potential stumbling blocks?
Thanks very much for any feedback.

Well, nothing beyond the "normal" possible consular processing problems. Also,
the I-824 can take quite a while at certain INS Service Centers. You might ask
your Congressperson to request expedited processing after you get the I-824
receipt notice.
