Default H-1b duration

I had an H-1B petition approved in July 2002, till 2005. The visa I was
issued in my home country, however, had an expiration date of November 2002
(I-94 is valid till 2005).
I was looking in my passport at H-1B visa stamp, and found a small sentence
in the right bottom part of the visa saying "PED 01 july, 2005". Does anyone
know what does PED stand for.
Thanks

PED = Petition Expiration Date.

It basically tells the immigration officer to admit you until 2005 even
though the visa expires earlier.

Unfortunately, no. You can only return to the US until the date specified
on your visa. There is an exception: most people can make short trips to
Canada or Mexico without a problem. See my FAQ for more information.
