Default F1 visa-do I need to renew?

My brother came to the states on an F1 visa. the Visa expired in
December 2005. He has Form I-20 which is signed by his University
Office saying that he will be enrolled untill 2008. My question is:
does he need to get a new F1 on his passport or is the form I-20 enough
for him to maintain his status? thanks!!!

Neither is true. What primarily counts is that he must have an unexpired
I-94 (the white form he got when he arrived in the USA). With an F-1, it
will usually say "D/S" which stands for "duration of status". If it says
"D/S" or has an expiration date in the future, he is OK.

Of course he must continue to meet the terms of admission: have a valid
I-20, attend school full time, work only within the permitted parameters
etc.

For more information on the difference between visa (the sticker in his
passport) and status, please visit my FAQ site at http://www.kkeane.com .

thanks very much. the I-94 says D/S. my concern was that the F-1 on
the passport is expired and that might renewal. The I-20 was signed by
his University officer, but there are no stamps from immigration. Is
the I-20 still valid? thanks so much for your help.
