Question ESTA & lost/replacement/different passport

I'm a UK passport holder & came through Miami (in-transit) on the ESTA however my passport was stolen in El Salvador, and intending to spend time in USA on the way back - once my replacement passport arrives [4 weeks & counting....].

Haven't found any postings regarding this. Pretty sure I need to apply for a new one but wondering if this causes any problems?

Any advice much appreciated.

That's a bummer about your passport; you might look here for user British Consul; his office in Florida may be able to help you get a travel document.

Regarding the ESTA questions, the DHS FAQ says:
Q: Do I ever need to reapply for travel authorization through the ESTA?

A: Yes, there are instances when a new travel authorization via ESTA would be required. If you have acquired a new passport or have had a change in name or other identifying biographical information, a new application must be submitted.

In addition, if your destination address or itinerary should change after your authorization has been approved, you may easily update that information through the ESTA Web site. The ESTA application may be updated to reflect the itinerary for each trip.

ESTA approvals will typically be granted for a period of two years or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever is sooner. ESTA will provide validity dates upon approval of the application.

Make sure the replacement passport is machine readable, and has an integrated photo and E-chip. Otherwise, you may not be able to use the VWP regardless of an approved ESTA.
