OBTAINING LAWFUL permanent resident status (LPR), also known as a green card, is a goal for many people in the United States. Two common routes that can be taken in obtaining LPR status are through a family based petition (I-130), or an employment based petition (I-140). These two categories are further divided into preference categories. For example, the employment categories are divided into five preference categories, which will be referred to as first, second, third, fourth and fifth preference.
