Default does passport have to be valid at least 6 months at time of interview?

Hi Everyone,

My question is: (for I-130 immigrant visas):

Does your passport have to be valid for at least 6 more months at the time of the interview? I haven't seen this specified anywhere but I sure don't want to find out the hard way. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

I thought it was more that the passport had to still have a validity date of 6 months or more.

I thought the passport had to be "valid" for longer (I can't remember how long)
I thought it was because if you need to renew it in the US it has to be coutersigned by someone who has known you for a certain amount of time. I'm not sure of the timescales or length of time the person has to have known you, but let's say it was a year, in some circumstances some "aliens" may not have known anyone in the US for that long and are therefore unable to renew their passport quite easily at a foreign embassy (In my case the UK Embassy) because they are unable to have it countersigned.
Sorry if this sounds a bit muddled, I'm sure someone else will pick up the thread, but I'm reasonably certain that is why "Aliens" passports have to have a "long shelf life"

I had heard 6 months, preferrably a year. As for the sworn statement by someone who knows you blah blah blah that is only for some countries and not a requirement of all. Canada is one that requires it.
