Question Do I need a visa to re-enter US as a Green Card Holder ?

Hi-
I search through the forum and I didn't come accross any question. I am
a green card holder and I am planning to go back to my original country for a month.

Question: I am wondering whether I need to get a US visa stamp in my passport at the US embassy in my home country in order to re-renter the US.

I think all that I need is my passport and my green card. Correct?

I understand that if I plan to stay over 6 months then, I will need additional documents b4 I leave the US. Correct.

Thanks for your response.

Correct. All you need is your foreign passport and your green card.

Passport and Greencard - and on the way back, just complete the Customs Declaration, no I-94 needed. An you can come thru Immigration on the US Citizens and Residents sides too!

If you plan to be outside of the US for a year or more you need to have applied for a re-entry permit via form I-131.

Hi:

The I-551 card is a "reentry permit" provided the holder has been out of the US less than one year.

Even if the holder has been out MORE than a year, the I-551 is still a valid BOARDING document, but is not a valid entry document.

Other than the above general rules, this is a particularly complicated area of the law. And there is a big debate going on what the effect of the 1996 amendments are.

Hi:

Although you what you recommend is a damn good recommendation, it is not necessarily true. As I say, the area of law is particularly complicated.
