Change of address/Case Status Inquiry request form/A# ???

My wife came here on a F1 visa 3 years ago. We married 14 months ago, and filed for
AOS 13 months ago. We just moved, and wanted to tell the INS of our new address.
THey gave her a form to complete called the "Case Status Inquiry--Request Form." One
of the blanks is for "A#". What is that? I recall asking myself that same question
when we filled out the forms doe AOS a year ago, but I do not recall ever resolving
the issue.

One of the blanks asked if other family members are filing with her? What does that
mean? She is over her by herself. THe only family member who they could mean is me. I
did have to fill out a couple of forms a year ago, but I am an American citizen, born
here. Do they mean me, because I filled out forms a year ago, and I also moved?

Also, what does the "Request File Transfer to" blank on the form mean?

TIA

Before answering that, let me suggest that you shouldn't bother with this form. INS
ignores these forms unless the AOS has taken an unusually long time (and often, even
in these cases). Note that in many INS offices, 13 months would be an exceptionally
SHORT time, three to four years are not unheard of in some parts of the country.

The correct form for a change of address is AR-11, which you can download from the
INS Web site. You can also simply write a letter.

Regardless of how you inform INS of the change of address, expect INS to ignore it.
Chances are that no matter what you do, INS will send all notifications to your old
address. So make very sure you have a working forwarding order!

This is the Alien Registration Number. Since you filed for AOS, you should have one.
Depending on how you filed the AOS (at the local INS office or at a service center),
you may find the A# on the INS receipt notice, or on some other document.

Also, I believe F-1s are sometimes issued A#s.

    >One of the blanks asked if other family members are filing with her?

That would apply if a whole family applied for AOS. For instance, if the AOS was
employment-based, she could also bring her husband and minor children with her.
Similarly, if she applied as the wife of a US citizen, she could bring her own minor
children, too.

In theory, this would apply for instance if you moved to a different INS office
district. INS would then transfer the file to the new office.

In practice, this is virtually guaranteed to mess up your case. Most people in this
situation prefer to leave the file where it is, and travel to the old location.

That sounds very scary! How are we ever going to be able to get notification of
teh AOS interview, which we were told might take 3 year wait (one year has
already gone by).

What about getting permission for her to travel abroad (parole)?

Thanks very much for your detailed answer, BTW...

The best thing is not to move during that time. The second best thing is to call the
INS office from time to time, both to make sure that the still have the new address
on file and to check whether the appointment date may have come up.

    >What about getting permission for her to travel abroad (parole)?

Same thing. By the way, it's entirely possible that INS would send the advance
parole to the correct new address but overlook it for the AOS interview. INS is a
lot of fun
