Default Benefits - Uk versus US

I had a bit of misfortune recently and found myself out of work for a short period of time. For that short length of time I was amazed to find I was entitled to both unemployment benefit and housing benefit totaling about 150 pounds a week. As far as I know, the US does not have similar benefits - I dont remember there being a housing benefit ie. paying most of your rent for you.
Am I right?

Nope -- Google "Section 8" housing.
