Am I allowed to buy shares?

I'm a British student in the US, on a F1 visa.
I've been here over a year, and this semester, I'm doing a paid internship, in place
of classes.
Can I buy/sell shares? I just want to buy some shares, but I don't want to be
forbidden from selling them, if it's viable.

If you have a Social Security Number, you can buy and sell as you wish. Do
you have some companies you want to "short"?

Yes you can. But, to open a brokerage account you may need to have an individual tax
identification number (ITIN). You would Contact the broker with whom you are
interested in dealing and ask them. They will tell you what is needed for a person
who is not a permanent resident nor a US citizen.

Thanks for the feedback.
I do have a Social Security Number now - would I still need the ITIN, do you think?
