Hi everyone,

My last set of documents were submitted to the NVC last June, and my
file has been under Administrative Processing (security checks) since.
I call regularly but the NVC has no timeframe, status or any other
information, just that an external agency (presumably DHS) has to
finish this process and get back to them. I am Iranian-born, which I'm
sure has an impact.

Given that NVC hsa no timeline for this process, how long do you think
I should wait before I do anything? And what exactly can I do, anyway?
I'm not too optimistic that having an immigration lawyer follow up on
the case would be too useful right now, but eventually... should I wait
1 year, 2 years...?

Unfortunately, there is very little you can do but wait. The administrative
processing unfortunately is a black hole, and there is not much information
coming out. My guess is that it will be done shortly; it would be very
unusual for the whole process to take more than one year (although it has
happened on occasion).

Do call NVC from time to time; they may not be able to help you directly,
but they can then prod the agency where the case is actually sitting to
hopefully speed up your process. No guarantee that it will help, though :-(

Is it different from the regular Finger Print and/or FBI name check?

It is the finger print and name check. There are different "degrees" of it
based on your country of origin and other factors.

For some people, the name check is as simple as looking up the name in the
computer, and the fingerprint may be non-existent. If the name pops up, or
there are other reasons (travel history, country of birth or nationality or
residence, age, gender all play a role), then they may use both the name
and fingerprint to identify you. And this can take longer.

BTW, the main reason they take the fingerprint is not for the background
check, but because they want to be able to compare the fingerprint on the
visa with the fingerprint of the person actually using the visa.
