During the time he will be at work i would really like to get involved in life in New York as we hope to eventually make it a permanant move and i'd like to see how i like the city. I have still got a lot of art gallerys to see and other things like that but id like to do some more sociable activities. I dont imagine i can join a gym as im not a US citizen but i would like to do some yoga/pilates or dance classes.

I'd really love some advice and recommendations of things i could get involved in while im there. Im quite adventurous and love to try new things.

I work in childrens tv production and at a childrens summer camp so have good childcare references, what are the possibilities of being able to do some babysitting while im over there??

I hope i havent been too cheeky asking for advice but any you can give would be great!

Thank you

Look up the Metro North and the Long Island Railroad. They offer one day trips to interesting places, i.e. Oyster Festival in September (I believe) in Oyster Bay, Long Island, Fire Island, Montauk, South and North Hampton. Metro North has one day excursions to upper Westchester/Dutchess/Columbia Counties and their trips also encompass the Connecticut line which leaves from Grand Central.

Venture into City Island and take a boat trip in Long Island Sound. You can take the bus to Atlantic City for a day on the boardwalk and gambling if that is your thing. Or the train to Foxwoods Casino on the Connecticut/Rhode Island border.

You can take Amtrak to Boston for a weekend or to Philadelphia or Washington DC.

In the city itself visit SoHo, Greenwich Village, Battery Park. Look for walking tours in lower Manhattan. They range from history lessons on the settling of Manhattan to ghost tours.

Good luck!

Actually I find that NYC is an excellent place to meet people. All you have to do is be friendly and smile. Never at a lost to finding someone to chat with over lunch, at the bookstore, at the coffee shop. Especially if you stay within your living area and frequent a place more than once it is easy to strike up a conversation and from there anything goes, including friendships.

What everyone else said.

However, a good source for finding out about special interest groups and volunteering for non-profits etc. you may like to take a look at the NYC section of:

http://www.craigslist.org

Note: as for volunteering to work with children eg. in an hospital, you may need to have security clearance (police record check etc.) just like in the UK and evidence of all of your vaccination records - in particular they would almost certainly expect that you have had jabs for Hepatitis B.

There is a great deal more to New York than NYC !
Get up state ........... and I don't just mean a little north of the Tapansee Bridge either, I mean the Adirondacks and Lake George.

Agree, particularly since I was married in Queensbury, NY just on the edge of Lake George. The Tappan Zee Bridge can be seem as a dividing line for the lower part of NYS. Anything north of the Zee is more rural and becomes even more so the further north you go. Hence the suggestion to take Metro North on a day trip. I use it once in a great while to visit my sil in Montreal. Pick up the train in Yonkers and change trains in Albany and continue north right across the border to Canada. Beautifully visual ride. Taking the car, of course, is faster but the scenery doesn't enthrall you until you pass Lake George and enter the Adirondacks. Then it is breathtakingly beautiful.

Wow, this could be a thread all on it's own.

New York pizza.... droool.... My friend Dino's just bought a pizza parlour so I'm looking forward to scoffing loads of it.

In New York it's thin and crispy. Chicago is traditionally deep pan "pie" isn't it?

Chicago has the pan pie. We also have lots of thin and relatively crispy.

Actually, the classic "New York" style as I know it is fairly thin, but soft - they fold it to eat it.

Of course, New York is a big city, I'm sure they have all kinds.

We have deep dish and thin and crispy, lol

Yes, meeting people in NY is easy, as someone said, just smile. I hope you saw the Central park link I put up as there is so much going on there. I could give you children's tv people but they can take interns, even without pay without reporting it and this could be bad for you.

I believe from the IRS point of view there is a limit to the amount of days.

Now now, don't you dare pick on my beloved Chicago deep dish... you can pick on my country, on religion, on my Hershey's.

BUT NOT MY DEEP DISH!
