I've encountered it once or twice among the Heather generation and they pronounced it like the surname Collins. All the Colins I have ever known--a few down through the years--pronounced it with a long O like Colin Powell. Research would probably show that it is just another case of pronunciation being retained in the U. S. after it changes in Britain.
