jeez, I just go out of the house for my free (at point of service) NHS consult, and pick up my free prescription, get home ... and the North Americans have woken up! Rolling all over BE like shock & awe all over again!

The US Census also ignores everyone under age 5 for its language calculations. So as of the 2010 census, the number of those who were counted as English speakers would have been 78 million people lower than the total US population.
Comparing a figure like that to another country's total population and presuming that 100% of them (including the babies and infants) are native speakers is not going to make for a fair match-up, given how specific the US figure is.
