The missus was saying how silly all the news is and how 10 years ago, this would have just been called a storm.

We're in the 24-30" pocket.

Yeah, we've had 3ft plus a few times here in Colorado. We don't make the news when it happens to us. First time it happened while I lived in Boulder was the day the U.S. launched its shock and awe on Iraq.

This doesn't mean I don't feel for you all up there. It's a pain in the arse.

It is amusing how we're under a state of emergency and a travel ban for all non-essential folks.

It's not even all that bad yet, don't think there's even an inch of snow on the car yet.

Makes sense to me. A heavy snowfall is expected...most people are safely home now and they want it to stay that way. If the roads are empty...especially from of accidents and abandoned cars...they can plough and treat the roads quicker and more efficiently.

In theory...didn't work very well the last time they had a travel ban around here

Lack of cars driving meant the snow built up and wasn't flattened and the grit was lost under the snow so there was just as many accidents but it was doctors/nurses/electrical folks that were either getting about to work or responding to accidents of others, getting into accidents

Yep. This happened in one of our snowstorms too that they put a curfew in place. The place I worked for at the time sent a Hummer to pick me and three other nurses up. We were stopped by the cops who were fine with us being essential personnel. It's really bad if folks get stuck caring for patients for shifts at a time.

I do have to go to work whatever the weather. The thing is, if they offer you a ride to work you negotiate a guaranteed ride back.

About 10 years ago relatively heavy snow was forecast in Charlotte after the schools had opened and everyone had gone to work. All the offices in the downtown area were declared closed at around 11am. The schools also declared that they were closing at midday and parents needed to collect their children. It wasn't actually snowing, but almost everyone leaving work simultaneously created the worst grid-lock traffic jam I have ever seen there. People who lived 20-30 minutes from downtown took 2-3 hours to get home, despite there still not being any actual snow!

Mrs P and I (we always commuted together back then) agreed to wait until the traffic cleared, unless the snow became imminent. Around 4pm, with the roads deserted and still no sign of any snow whatsoever, we set off home. What was usually, in normal traffic, a 60-70 minute drive home took us less than 50 minutes. The roads were more or less deserted, less traffic on the road than I have seen in the middle of the night, at times no other moving vehicles visible in front or behind us, even on the interstate.

Oh, and we got all the way home without ever seeing a flake of snow!

Our 2 year old decided 8.45pm would be the perfect time to projectile vomit over 2 piles newly folded laundry, our bed and over the missus. Cue yours truly having to yomp to local package store a few blocks away to get $10 of quarters. Forced into buying a PBR six pack, partly to dull the pain of spending next several hours doing laundry!

Seems like it's mostly not as bad as predicted...although it looks pretty bad further north. Several years ago the NYC Met area was caught out with a snow storm...the mayor got a lot of flak for it. Since then they have tended to over estimate the storms.

Very happy to say that this has turned out to be not a patch on the feet upon feet of snow that we got in January 2011 in Fairfield County. The snow continues to fall, but it is so light that the trees don't seem to be in any danger. We got about six inches, on top of the seven that fell on Saturday, so a very average storm. But I know things are very different in the eastern part of the state and hope the folks there are doing OK.

The car is literally half buried under the snow and the snow bank at the end of the drive way is about as high as the car and the snow is only picking up the pace.
