Do the teachers not go back a week before the kids? They do around here...

Just moved from AZ to OH, and the start date was the same for both: Wednesday 12 August.

I'd got the impression that the earlier start was to allow as many teaching days as possible before the kids sit the standardized tests, usually sometime in mid-April. Given so many states are doing Common Core now and presumably working towards very similar tests, won't they have to rationalize at some point? Otherwise those kids not going back until practically mid-September would have covered significantly less material; how could they all be tested on the same curriculum and against the same goals per grade level?

It depends significantly on the weather as to how many days children are in school between December and February, and the degree to which the school buses and the state/ county road maintenance department is equipped to get children to school when it snows.

In NC, if there is white stuff on the ground, the schools will be closed, even in areas where snow is common. Counties with a history of many snow days tend to start their school year earlier.

Interesting. Our school goes back very late and it generally scores highest in the state and does pretty well nationally on Common Core.

That doesn't explain why the kids went back to school August 3rd in ATL though. Snow days are not a big thing here...

"Significantly", not "entirely".

Maybe children in Georgia are dumb.

August 20th for BVSD. I think it's a little too early.

Start back tomorrow, I've just set my alarm . Broke up June 5, can't believe it's gone so quickly.

San Diego region seems all over the place these days depending on school district.

Looks like my old high school school district had all their schools start on 7/22, their last day of school was June 5th and they get a 2 week break from late Sept to Early October, normal Christmas break, 2 weeks in late March/Early April, then out in June.

I think if I were in school that is a better schedule, shorter but more frequent breaks.

So in one county, so far out of 4 school districts starts dates in July, August and then the traditional still in September...

The American school here in Hong Kong starts August 18, but we get 3 weeks off at Christmas an extra week off during the year (Chinese New Year) so I think we're a bit early.
