US Restaurants

You snob! My Father in law eat his instant cake on top of his main meal on his paper plate with his plastic fork still covered in gravy while drinking his milk out of a green plastic cup with his name on it.

I'm talking about silverware being set down that is dirty. Whatever happened to nice polished silverware?
I guess where I'm from, our standards at ALL restaurants are a tad beyond what people here are used to.
And I'm talking little hole in the wall places in South Africa and Portugal I usually frequent. Not your posh five star places (though my brother was bitching about his experiences in Boston a few weeks ago and how dirty and filthy the 5 star places up there were - save a French place he went to).

How are they decent if they are filthy? Where are you eating? I personally would walk out if I felt a place was filthy. I wouldn't wait to find out if the plates were still wet.

Let's put it this way. Not a chain? I think poppy hit it on the head. Where I'm from, even the hole in the wall places are quality compared to most restaurants I've ever been in in the US.

Expecting silverware that is not spotted or has food residue on it?
Plates that aren't even dry yet being set down?
Linen without a spot or two on it, due to the laziness of the staff who can't be bothered to change it?
Quelle horreur! What unreal standards I must have! But then. I do habite in trough-central and beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

Hmmm it has to be where you are, where you are going, something isn't right *shrug*. None of the locally owned restaurants here are nasty and we are ones to look at the health department rating everywhere we go. Of course we are small town America, where word of mouth means a lot to a business. Which reminds me, are these places being recommended to you? Or are you just stopping in for a bite here or there?
Check the ratings on some of these places and if it is filthy call the health department and tell them. There is no justification what so ever for a restaurant to be filthy as you describe.
Act like an American and complain to the manager
(worked for me all my adult life)! Even try calling a manager on day shift, if you are having your meal on night shift. There is usually a battle in the kitchen going on as to who does or shall we say doesn't do their job. Maybe you can rely on a different shift to tattle tell. Call the owner, I bet you could google them! Of course this is all useless IMO because I wouldn't go back, though it might save the next guy from having to sit down to yuckiness.
I owned and operated a small restaurant years ago. The only hit I EVER took on an inspection was the door on the ladies room had a broken automatic closer.
I still got my 100% because he gave me time to fix it and came back. This is why I wonder where you are going. If these are privately owned, this is their lively hood. It would make no sense for them to keep a gross business when in food service. Just my 2 cents.
Sorry you aren't finding decent places to dine. My hubby has put on nearly 20 pounds since his arrival. Then again I am local and know where to go or not go
