Tips, should I?

I'm more than happy to tip in restaurants, or anywhere I sit down to eat or drink. I always feel slightly uncomfortable though when I go for take-out though.

I've just collected my lunch order from CPK, and there is a line for Tip amount, I never tip in this instance, but then feel slightly guilty. What does everyone else do?

Carryout? No. The line is there because that's how the forms are printed out, but I never tip for carryout (unless the gal behind the counter is really cute).

Ditto (maybe not for cute but for helpful or ..etc).

PF Changs, the folks that work the take out section don't get tips from the eat in tips, so I'd tip them if the food was ready when they say it'll be.

Other wise I don't tip take out unless it is delivered.

At a bar, I tip if a drink is brought over, but I don't tip per drink if I'm getting them at the bar, but if service is generally good, I'll tip the bar before leaving or if I had a tab and I'm tabbing out other wise I won't.

I wouldn't.

The cashiers at the take out window make minimum wage or more. The wait staff makes server's wage which is less than minimum because the tips are factored in as expected salary.

You're welcome. :) I actually looked into it once because it was bothering me. At the time I was picking up a LOT of take away food for my office and it just seemed a grey area. People still can tip the cashiers if they're really good but it isn't expected. If I do tip, it's normally only a dollar or "keep the change" type of thing.

Not everywhere, I think that's a Southern thang.

Oh really? What do they make up there?

As a general rule, people in this area (near Chicago) would not tip for service or food that we had to go pick up ("carry out" or "take out"); however, we generally WOULD tip a delivery person for bringing food to our homes or businesses.

OP: does the restaurant you got your food from today offer delivery? If so, it's possible that is what that line was for.

Yes they do delivery and its a restaurant too, so yes I agree the line is there as standard. I just wanted to check I wasn't breaking the unwritten laws though, I don't like to be tight:o

It's true here, in fact, the tax code taxes for tips, received or not.
