Tips, should I?

I'm more than happy to tip in restaurants, or anywhere I sit down to eat or drink. I always feel slightly uncomfortable though when I go for take-out though.

I've just collected my lunch order from CPK, and there is a line for Tip amount, I never tip in this instance, but then feel slightly guilty. What does everyone else do?

Re: Tips, should I?

Carryout? No. The line is there because that's how the forms are printed out, but I never tip for carryout (unless the gal behind the counter is really cute).

Ditto (maybe not for cute but for helpful or ..etc).

Re: Tips, should I?

PF Changs, the folks that work the take out section don't get tips from the eat in tips, so I'd tip them if the food was ready when they say it'll be.

Other wise I don't tip take out unless it is delivered.

At a bar, I tip if a drink is brought over, but I don't tip per drink if I'm getting them at the bar, but if service is generally good, I'll tip the bar before leaving or if I had a tab and I'm tabbing out other wise I won't.

I wouldn't.

Re: Tips, should I?

The cashiers at the take out window make minimum wage or more. The wait staff makes server's wage which is less than minimum because the tips are factored in as expected salary.

You're welcome. :) I actually looked into it once because it was bothering me. At the time I was picking up a LOT of take away food for my office and it just seemed a grey area. People still can tip the cashiers if they're really good but it isn't expected. If I do tip, it's normally only a dollar or "keep the change" type of thing.

Not everywhere, I think that's a Southern thang.

Re: Tips, should I?

As a general rule, people in this area (near Chicago) would not tip for service or food that we had to go pick up ("carry out" or "take out"); however, we generally WOULD tip a delivery person for bringing food to our homes or businesses.

OP: does the restaurant you got your food from today offer delivery? If so, it's possible that is what that line was for.

Yes they do delivery and its a restaurant too, so yes I agree the line is there as standard. I just wanted to check I wasn't breaking the unwritten laws though, I don't like to be tight:o

It's true here, in fact, the tax code taxes for tips, received or not.

What about the barber shop.

Should I be tipping there??

I've only ever heard of those reduced server wages in the South, but I don't get out much you know.

IIRC, the IRS assumes 8% of your sales will be received in tips; you have to report your sales (rather, the restaurant does).

It's a north east thing too. In fact in some states the only wages the server gets is tips. Servers usually have to tip out a percentage of the tips to the other staff. Any discrepancy between the bill and the amount paid...the server usually pays that out of his/her own pocket...or at least they did where my daughter worked.

I waitressed for many years as a second job and my daughters have as well. Here you make 1/2 of minimum wage as tips are to be counted towards your wages.

Yes, I will tip with carryout depending on the type of carryout place I am going to, i.e. will tip if it is a restaurant and not a little sandwich shop and if it is a little sandwich shop that I go to 2 or 3 times a week, I will usually give a $20 at Christmas time.

We tip the postman at Christmas,

Because having to walk in winter in Chicago (Or any further north) is hard work. And he's a nice guy..

As for having hair! I have lots. cheeky bugger!

I give him a 20 and the price is 15, that's a good tip, right?

Re: Tips, should I?

I work as a bartender and I receive way less than minimum wage. We are supposed to get $4.15 an hour and I only get $25 for a 9-10 hour shift because I have a cheap boss. I live on tips. Most of my tips are credit card tips which go directly in my paycheck and get taxed like a regular salary. I receive very little cash. Luckily the place I work at is a nice place and tips are good. Business is not what it was before the recession but we are still doing ok. I always tip for takeout even if it's a few dollars. Most of the customers where I work tip on takeout orders. I get tipped out by the waitstaff and I tip out the food runner/busboy. Also I remember the bad tippers just as much as the good ones!

What do you tip at a buffet? I was told I should only tip 10% as you get the food yourself  I tip the same as I would at a sit down after all they do the same amount of work Drink orders and removing the used dirty plates, depending on how many times you back to the buffet, they may actually do more work.

I tip 15% at a buffet if they are taking drink orders and clearing plates. 20-25% at a sit down dinner .

I always thought that as you got your own food then they tipped you? This could explain why I got thrown out of my local Chinese the other month...

CA I had a second job as a waitress and its minimum wage plus your own tips in the 3 restaurants I worked in.....It was better money then my day job would make around $400 in 2 nights.

I don't tip If I actually walk in to get the food, but I've used that Applebees "Carside to go" thingy a couple of times and tipped then.....usually because I've used it when it's bloody freezing outside and I dont want to have to get out the car

The only tip I would give our postman is "try not to be such a lazy arsehole next year ok?"

I meant not standard industrywide or nationwide. There are probably other places that do the same but I just haven't heard about it. Waiting tables is not a bad gig here either though it sounds like it is a better gig there.

It's not a rule . It's a courtesy. Like I said I remember the bad tippers as well. It's amazing how weak your drink can get if you don't tip well!

Re: Tips, should I?

I am so confused with tipping it is not even funny anymore, but the thing I don't get is why should I tip when I get bad service. It has happened on a few occasions now and my US partner tends to pick up the tab because she knows I really don't want to reward bad service.
