Great decision.

One wonders how Obama will respond. Surely he must ask Congress for authorization?

Can't help but contrast the noise being made about Assad with the almost complete silence as Egypt's military kills civilians. And what's more, the Egyptian military took power in a coup against a democratically elected government.

Assad? Bomb him. Egypt's military? Keep plying them with aid.

I thought Obama stopped some Jet sales?

Anyway Dems said they would impeach Obama if he tried something without Congress approval.

"delayed" apparently. In the meantime the US won't call a coup a coup as that would suspend $1.2bn of military aid that Egypt gets yearly.

I know it is symptomatic of politics, but the pretense that the driving factor is the humanitarian aspect is what galls me about this. Egypt is a perfectly good current example, but the complete lack of action during the genocide in Rwanda shows the true value of life in the global scheme of geopolitics. It's a handy excuse to trot out when it suits your interests and nothing more.

Realpolitics.

Nothing wrong with that, the pretence otherwise gets me.

Can't help think that being honest about what the national interest is would garner more support, as I think many now say no when it is presented as humanatarian, as we know it is not.

Well I am not sure that would help after the "national interest" was invoked by Bush and his cronies in relation to Saddam's supposed WMDs. Being honest period might be a better bet.
