After Mr Weeze's got cloned for the 3rd time he set up an auto account notification. It emails him whenever a transaction is made without the cardholder being present. I do NOT like this.

i have setup email/text alerts on my accounts. Doesn't stop it happening but atleast I have chance to catch it quickly. In the US people give their cards over to strangers too easily, especially in restaurants. In the UK this is less of the case.

I agree, in the UK the waiter/waitress will bring the card machine to your table, in fact, I don't think they are allowed to take the card away. In the US it is the norm to take the card away and sometimes for quite a while.

oh dear god, what is it with Target and card security??
Took brand spanking new debit card with chip and pin to local target. Swiped as per usual then card reader cleverly realises that this card has a chip and tells me to insert the chip. Which I do. Then next thing I'm being asked to sign electronically. Cashier says thank you have a nice day and I realise that my "more secure" chip and pin debit card could have been used by anyone. I hadn't signed the back of the card, she didn't look for a signature anyway, didn't ask for any id and I wasn't prompted for a pin number. Good eh? You'd have thought they'd have learned.

I never use a debit card in a store. When I use a credit card most stores very rarely ask to see a signature. Places like costco you don't even have to sign if it's under $100

Not uncommon. Signatures nobody cares about anymore. They may have added chip and pin here, but then they also added tap and go, so no PIN, no signature, just tap and on your way, could be anyone's card for all the store knows.

Not all merchants do tap and pay, but many do now, granted its only up to $100 at any one time, but eh a crook can do many $100 purchases and never need the pin.

half the issue is that the data on the mag strip matches the data on the chip. If that corresponds then they know the card is not a 'cloned' fabricated card. It may still be stolen - but that requires them to have gotten close to you or your property and is on an individual basis - a cloned card would be from something like the target incident where the card numbers and stuff were stolen and cards created to use them by the thousand. so chip and pin will reduce that kind of fraud.

PLUS if the store does not use the chip/pin - then the bank can push all the fraud back to them.
