If your phone number is in your FB profile (whether public or not), and someone who has it allows FB to access their contacts, you will get suggestions for people who simply have your number in their phone. This has been been the case for at least 6 years and has nothing to do with WhatsApp.

Have you provided your phone number as an alternate / emergency account unlock method? I seem to recall being asked to do that in several apps - a sort of last-ditch way to get you back into your account if your account is locked out.

genau.
, most people don’t understand the massive trade-off they are making with their information when they sign up for the “free” site.
On Thursday, Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, the country’s antitrust regulator, ruled that Facebook was exploiting consumers by requiring them to agree to this kind of data collection in order to have an account, and has prohibited the practice going forward.
“Facebook will no longer be allowed to force its users to agree to the practically unrestricted collection and assigning of non-Facebook data to their Facebook user accounts,” FCO president Andreas Mundt said in a statement announcing the decision.

Just in case you were relying on the UK news propaganda machine, aka the BBC for your news.
Here it is from CNN and Carole Cadwallader.
Parliamentary inquiry - FB knowingly broke UK data privacy laws and labels them "digital gangsters". They are also calling for an investigation into all UK elections since 2014. Prime ministers question time could be interesting this week.

Also Brittany Kaiser - a Cambridge Analytica employee who worked both sides of the Atlantic.... has been subpoenaed to appear in the Mueller investigation into Russian ties. Again. nothing from the BBC.

As for the friend suggestions Facebook seems to also suggest people who have looked at your profile or whose profile you have looked at, I would imagine several of your clients probably Googled you to have a nose, I certainly do when I have to deal with anyone new. That is of course on top of the Whatsapp sharing stuff.

Re: so, how does your FB data get used?
the BBC link came 48 hours after the select committees conclusions were published. I suspect that the govt wanted it hidden amongst the other news this weekend. And besides, the BBC make no mention of the parliamentary select committee's recommendation that ALL UK elections since 2014 be investigated.

This potted history of media and social media seems to be a fair summary, but may be too alarming for those of a frail disposition.
It's 17:10 of content - the last 2½ minutes are an in-video ad.

His not very optimistic conclusion - think critically but not cynically, and lead with kindness ...
My biggest criticism of Trump is that he has 'fed' this machine more than anyone. We should have a President fighting against the hysteria that blames everything as 'fake news', not one who is actively encouraging it.

Interesting article about FB and tech ...

As much as i despise FB and have big concerns about tech and privacy/security, I do think his point is valid that the Government isn't qualified to take these kinds of actions.
