When I went through the process myself, I vowed never, ever to go "off piste" and buy stuff that wasn't on the Registry (assuming there was a Registry in the first place).

but - and sorry if I ask ---- if you got loads of unwanted shite doesn't that mean you never had a wedding list ........ or did people just add lib ????

No, we did have a wedding list/registry, people either just ignored it or didn't even know what one was. It was the British side of the family that was more likely to ad lib than the American side too. (There was a decent spread of stuff, so it wasn't like every listed item was unaffordable or impractical $5000 crystal!)

Now I would just give people cash or a gift from the registry. I know some people think cash is tacky but, you know, it is incredibly useful...

well , that's the kind of Italian way of doing it .................. if they don't have a specified list then it's cash in an envelope ..................

which if it's a group thing is fairly fine ........... if it's just me I don't really want the couple to know how stingy I have been . if you get my drift. A well chosen cheap present can look expensive ! Cash can only be counted !!!!

Lorna, you are right. The silly gift is in addition to the more useful one from the gift registry. We have more or less decided what is going to be in the silly gift. Little things that will get some use, ie small photo album, wooden spoons, candles, etc. Thanks for all the suggestions folks.
