Re: Seconds away... round three!
They must have different rules in SC? I emailed the DMV and got a reply back saying we couldn't take our tests in a rental, but we could borrow one from friends or family. Luckily we'll have the money to just go and buy one when we get there, but I was wondering what the rules were for buying / insuring a car without a SC licence. I know it'll be damned expensive whatever they are!
Think of each US state like a European country...they all have different laws. Not only from state to state but county to county and town to town...all very different...then there are federal laws.

Oh OK - I should have looked into that at the time. It's going to be high anyway when you're new to the country though.

Re: Seconds away... round three!
I just got an online quote ready for our move, we have a 2010 Ford escape and a 97 dodge ram truck, the premium for both vehicles with both of us as named drivers was $105.91 a month. One of the questions was "what age did you become a licensed driver, US/Canada?" I'm guessing you won't be able to get a quote online, if you can't get past this question? Of course you could if you just get a quote for the Mrs.
We used Einsure, there is one called safeco, which was a bit cheaper (-$12 per month)
We also found out that there is a 'property tax' on vehicles, 6% of FMV(fair market value) for auto. It's a seperate tax to registration (reg' is every two years)
You have to pay that tax before you register the vehicle, has to be done (along with getting SC DL) within 45 days of moving into residence.

Here's hoping the money from the house sale comes through before we move.... looks like we're going to spend our life savings on bleedin' transport!

Forgot to mention..... I've moved on from a 3.0L Escape to a 4.0L Nissan Pathfinder... is that a bad thing? It'll change a dozen times before we move anyway!

If you don't want to pay high property taxes on your car, get an older model with high mileage. They will adjust the rate accordingly. That's why you'll see plenty of old gas guzzler trucks and SUVs here. Think of all that extra pollution. Ah well, I forgot, few believe in the concept of Global Warming here. It's all a lie by those radical Liberal scientists.
However, fair's fair. SC does have the lowest cost of gas in the country right now. Hovering around the $2.70 mark:

Re: Seconds away... round three!
Bloody hell! I'm preparing myself already for being tipped upside down and shaken, but that takes the biscuit. Another $1200 on a $20K car before you even start looking for insurance. Mrs_I used to have hers with State Farm, so I'm thinking about contacting a local agent (we think we've decided on Summerville to live) and asking for a discount if we get renters insurance from them at the same time. Don't know if the fact she's dealt with them before will hold any weight....

Hubby talked to a guy at work there this morning, he said he has never paid more than $250 per year in taxes on his car, not sure how he does that, but we will find out
We would probably have chosen Summerville to live, if it wasn't for the high school in Mt.P, that's one of the reasons for us only signing a 1 year lease though, after our Son is finished with high school in 2011, we can move, if we want too Good luck with getting your house sale money before you move, I guess the best thing is to just be prepared for unexpected expenses and if they don't happen, you will have extra money
Have you got help in SC, from someone looking for a place for you? I am hearing that rentals in Summerville and Mt.P, are being snapped up pretty quickly, by the Boeing employees moving into those areas, might be an idea for you guys to get on that 'bandwagon' quick like!

I think we found the car too, but it's not going to do us any favours in the property tax department!
