I was rather holding out for tea and biscuits. Custard Creams, preferably.

:)

Hmmm... Thinking about Pork Scratchings now... One of the things on my "can't find it" list.

There would have to be an incentive. Cakes or something.

Now, I say I've never met a BE member but I do now have a vague recollection that I was going to a job interview last summer and the bloke on the security desk did turn out to be a poster in a thread I was in.

Not sure that counts though.

I was picking my daughter up from school, and a woman came over to talk to my dog. I noticed she was English so we struck up a conversation and are now quite good friends. When she mentioned where her husband worked and she had moved from LA, I remembered her post on BE about the upcoming move, we'd done the same move so it had stuck with me. Small world

Collect sweepings from under your cooker and fridge, they'll be the same as scratchings.

Do you have feral pigs living under your fridge?

Seems to me that a meet up would be like having a fantasy come true, and there's no better way to ruin a good fanatasy thant that.

It's why I still have my accent unchanged after 14 years. No friends and I don't like talking to people.

One of those would be me:) we had a fun lunch together!

I'm going to be meeting an ex expat from this site soon when she visits Houston. Food and drink will probably be involved

I don't see what the harm is for a new poster to be posting to the meetup thread. How else are they supposed to get to know other people? That's like saying you need a residency requirement before you can join the local church (not that I would darken the doors of one; just saying).

Also. Houston? Really? It'll be a cold day in Hell before I try to arrange a meetup again. Sorry. Your turn.

You known kinda missed my point, that if your first post is "Hey there! Wanna meet up in Podunk?" nobody here has any idea who you are and therefore (perhaps?) less likely to respond than if you hung out for at least a couple of weeks, make a few posts, get to know some people, before suggesting a meetup. Compare it to internet dating, where you post a profile, reach out to a few people, exchange some messages, get to know them as far as you can, .... then suggest meeting for coffee or a cocktail. No?

Well, no, not really; we really discourage people from posting in most of the other threads unless they know something (especially in the immigration ones); I think people are just putting out a flag, "Hey we are expats and we live here and might want to make connections sometime". Maybe the meetup type groups I've been to are different, but they're more "get to know" and less "the clique" than what you seem to be describing. I could be wrong and people might see the meetup groups here as established clubs that you need to be "sponsored" to join, but that honestly was not my initial impression.
