Re: Meetups
I am surprised how often I see posts in the Meet ups sub-forum, that are from someone who has posted just a handful of times, or it's even their first post. Is it just me, or does that seem unlikely to get a favourable response?
I'm not averse to meet ups, but I have never participated in one arranged through BE (though Mrs P and I did meet someone we know through another forum), but I would look much more favourably on a post from someone who I "know" through, hundreds of posts, than someone whose first, or very early, post is: "Hey, I've just moved to Yourtown. Wanna meet up?". |
Re: Meetups
Dunno. It does seem a bit presumptuous at first glance but I suppose a cup of tea or a pint won't do anyone any harm.
I have met Brits out here but none of them were BE members, I just happened to meet them through random chance. |
Re: Meetups
I suppose early days are when you need someone.
Nicky didn't specifically ask for a meetup but we realized she lived close to me and met up. I also met 'Soap Addict' through the site. We do tell our kids not to do it  |
Re: Meetups
I've met a couple people here in SC through the meet up section on BE. In Indiana I met some people through others who were on BE and they became really good friends.

Re: Meetups
I don't know though, there are a fair few people on here I'd move to a new state to get away from ...

Re: Meetups
This is a bit like the person in the 'Tele' thread complaining about people talking about tele.

Which is exactly why I am unlikely to look favourably on a request from a single digit poster, and probably not even a double digit poster. |

Re: Meetups
Not through a Meetup thread, but have met up with a bunch of BE folks or helped others out in the area....
|
Re: Meetups
Just one question.
Why people in their 20's don't join social groups? |

Other than Sally, I've met a handful of people from here. A couple who had only made a couple of posts, but were obviously struggling so I reached out and we met up, both became and stayed friends. Another had made hundreds of posts on here, we met a few times, then she went bat shit crazy and it was all rather strange. |

Re: Meetups
I've often wondered - how crazy is bat shit, exactly? In comparison, are other varieties of shit considered quite sane?

Re: Meetups
I strongly suspect that most of you are probably axe murderers anyway, so I'm glad not to have met you.
|
Re: Meetups
In the context of 'meeting up' - I suppose I'm halfway there, since I have a bunch of BE mates on arsebook and I have emailed one or two members off-site because sometimes it's easier than PMs and that.

Re: Meetups
My mate on BE wants to know if your mate on BE wants to meet up sometime?

Re: Meetups
I went to a Houston meet-up ages ago and have met 3 other BE'ers separately and someone from the city-data Houston forum.
|
Re: Meetups
Sally, is that cat "tworking?". I'm not sure what tworking is, being too shy to ask my kids!
|
Re: Meetups
Would it mean going outdoors?
There would have to be an incentive. Cakes or something. |
Re: Meetups
I know quite a number of expats, and not one is on BE.
|
Re: Meetups
Now, I say I've never met a BE member but I do now have a vague recollection that I was going to a job interview last summer and the bloke on the security desk did turn out to be a poster in a thread I was in.
Not sure that counts though. |
Re: Meetups
Mrs N. says I shouldn't be allowed to speak to people.
Or be out in public really. :D |

It's Brits meeting up, it clearly involves alcohol, but may also include salt and vinegar crisps or pork scratchings
:) Hmmm... Thinking about Pork Scratchings now... One of the things on my "can't find it" list. |

Re: Meetups
Seems to me that a meet up would be like having a fantasy come true, and there's no better way to ruin a good fanatasy thant that.
