Excellent! What are you making for us? :)

It's so old that I can't remember what I planend to make. I'm sure I should throw it out by now.

On a related note - I still get the language wrong after 15 years here. I mentioned something about my "cardigan" a few days ago and got grief from my friends. Actually, they always think these Brit/Irish expressions are "cute" and "quaint." Could be worse......

Well I would use cardigan to describe a certain type of sweater.

I am a big cardigan-wearer myself... but I never know when the Canadian half is interfering with my American half. I'm finding that more and more of my vocab from mom's side didn't stray too far from the UK after all.

What is a puff pastry? I'll have to ask the DH (the Brit) that one. :D

I call it puff pastry. Actually I thought it was puffed, but have probably always been saying it wrong. I always struggle to find it though, maybe it's less common over here?

I ask because a couple of days ago when we were checking out of a hotel I asked the woman on the desk if she knew the name/make of the complementary toiletries left in the rooms. She told me they were specially made for the hotel and asked if I would like a sample to take home. She then came back with a roll of toilet paper.:unsure::confused::eek::lol::rofl:

Toiletries is familiar to me, but I work in market research and use this term all the time at work, that's probably why. Agree w/the others, maybe keeping it simple would have worked?

I say cardigan. A sweater with buttons you'd wear over something else, right? What on earth would you say instead?

I agree with the others -- toiletries is the correct word. Actually, I don't know what else they COULD be called -- there's really no other word for them.

I did a search on Dictionary.com and the results seem to confirm this: In the dictionary search, the result was, "An article, such as toothpaste or a hairbrush, used in personal grooming or dressing." In the thesaurus search, I got the following: "No results found for toiletries: Did you mean deleterious?"

If you asked about the toiletries and she brought you toilet paper, I wonder if maybe she simply didn't understand your accent? Obviously I don't know how strong your accent is but honestly that's the only thing that makes sense -- that she wasn't quite sure what you were asking about and she was too embarrassed to ask you to repeat yourself, but she heard the word "toilet" in there so she took a wild leap and brought out the toilet paper.

In TX anyway, cardigans are sweaters, and sweaters are sweaters. Cardigan makes more sense, of course!
