Default Planting a lemon tree

Having switched from slut mode to Charlie Dimmock mode (oops is there a difference?), I have spent the past half hour digging a deep, deep hole ... to plant a lemon tree.

Only to hit a bloody concrete slab! Bloody builders!!!

DAK if a lemon tree will be happy in a large pot or half barrel?

Thanks for any advice!

And what the heck is John Innes # 3 in 'merican?

I shall bear this in mind but seeing that it takes 18 months to bear fruit you're going to have to wait a while...

Guess I'll just have to go on harvesting in the neighbourhood for a little while longer

I'd just go for fruit and veg potting compost

I don't like gardening. I like opera, ing and Renaissance art.

When I was renovating our London house I would commission a Polish builder and let him stay in the spare room as part of the deal.

I wonder whether this would work with gardeners in Calilfornia?

I'm hoping to plant a lemon tree (when the garden is cleared up) so thanks for the link, Gruff. The neighbour's lemons taste wonderful.

What cultivar of lemon? Meyer is the most common and will do okay in a container.

Here's one website for the JI recipes:
http://www.the-organic-gardener.com/...html#jirecipes

Also:
http://www.backyardgardener.com/soil/soil2.html

nb

American compost = aged decayed organic matter, usually vegetable and animal manure -- NO SOIL or artificial nutrients
British compost = American "potting soil" -- can contain soil and artificial nutrients
