If you know ice is coming, cover your path with a roll of heavy duty (6 mil) plastic sheet. Just be sure to leave an end, or at least an "ear" protruding so you can pull it up along with the ice.

Calcium Chloride (bags usually say 'ice melt' on them) and direct sunlight, if your driveway has sufficient exposure work well for us.

Direct sunlight on its own works (it was 10F yesterday but the sun still melted ice on our drive) but the calcium will help get rid of the thicker patches of ice.

Calcium certainly would. Please can you upload a video of what your icy driveway looks like immediately after you have spread calcium on it?

Calcium chloride, I meant. Force of habit, I always shorten it to 'calcium' on invoices at work.

If there was a way I could take my comments back I would do so. Tell me what I can do to somehow right this wrong. Whatever it takes, I will do it.

Large companies with contracts departments that are just full of box tickers and can't work with things that don't fit into their stupid little forms...

Yeah I have resorted to using CaCl and it does help but if the ice is thick the ice at the bottom is still stubborn. Lot of CaCL required too.

I am told CaCL is bad for the grass??

You been trying to work with us? Our GP department is doing my nut because it takes them ****ing ages to get a contract signed because of the ****ing little forms.

All soluble mineral salts are bad for plants in excess, and chloride ions are particularly bad. If you care about plants close to your path and driveway, or where the run-off goes, you should use any mineral salt to melt snow or ice sparingly.
