OT: Civil Marriage Ceremony
Does anyone know the procedure for getting married in a court..or know
of links that describe the process? I am in NYC area.
I know it's premature since I am awaiting my 2nd NOA, but in trying to
prepare for a religious ceremony..I am stressed out because I can't pick
a date. We also want to participate in brief premarital preparatory
counselling when (please God!) he gets here. So my thought is to get the
legal aspects settled (after counselling) and then have a better shot at
putting the wedding together.
I may not even go the civil route...but it would probably free me
somewhat psychologically to proceed with my preparation and planning.
Thanks in advance!

Re: OT: Civil Marriage Ceremony
Where to go would depend on where you are.
I am sure you know someone in your area that knows where to get the
marriage license, correct?
The people that issue the license will have information on how you can
get married by a judge.

Elizabeth:
If you go to http://www.theknot.com/newyork you can find a link that
gives you all of the addresses where you can go to apply for your
marriage license. No matter if you get married in a religious or civil
ceremony, you need that!
I'm also in the NYC area and my fiance and I will be married by a sea
captain at our reception on a yacht that will sail around Manhattan.
There are lots of avenues you can pursue in regards to a civil ceremony.
If you want a religious ceremony you might be best off contacting a
member of your clergy or parish. I'm sure they can guide you on how best
to prepare given that us K-1 folk can't exactly plan their wedding 2
years in advance like most NYC folk.
Good luck! The Vermont Service Center processed our petition in 13 days.

Regarding the religious ceremony, the church in Michigan was really accomodating even though we got married religiously in France. But I had to go to several parishes before finding an understanding priest who would do the preparation in a short time due to INS.
Good luck,
