Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
We are off to a 'pot luck' brunch on Sunday - I am taking mini toad in the hole (that's fairly English) and Smoked Haddock Pate (cos I am Scottish).

Sag aloo.

Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
I once went to a Super Bowl party and forgot the side dish. So at the last moment I stopped in a McDonalds and ordered 'ten super sized French Fries' please. They had to cook them fresh for me (a plus) and gave me two huge bags filled with golden deliciousness.
I arrived at the party, made a beeline to the kitchen and said 'give me the biggest bowl you've got' dumping in all the fries. They were gone in minutes. |
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
Findus crispy pancakes, or fish fingers if the parties on a Friday.
|
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
If you want to trawl through some recipes for inspiration try
www.foodnetwork.com and look up Nigella Lawson....either that or take a couple of wedges of English chesse and some crackers! :) |
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
Parsley sauce. Acorn/butternut/spaghetti squash. Yams. Homemade apple sauce.
|
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
Yorkshire puddings.
|
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
Green beans of some sort. Or I vote for the broccoli (au gratin is nice). If you have a bread machine, you could make some nice bread and perhaps some honey-butter or some kind of special spread.
If desserts are an option - the possibilities are endless :) |

Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
I'm liking the cauliflower idea- have a recipe for "Frosted Cauliflower", parboil head, then make a paste of mustard and mayonaise, cover head with that, bake and then add cheddar cheese on top, pop back in oven to melt cheese and voila. Sounds weird but tastes pretty good say non caluiflower eaters.

One of my local restaurants is owned by a French guy. They do a lovely buffet carvery every lunchtime...the best bit is it usually includes two of my favourites...cauliflower cheese and dauphinoise potatoes. Sadly it's closing at the end of the month. :( |
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
Don't know what its called but....
Layer thinly cut potato and onions in a greased baking dish. Mix creme fresh, salt and pepper and a little milk, pour over the top, add a few knobs of butter and bung in the over until golden brown (350-380 depending on what else you have cooking). |
Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
We always take brownies and lemon bars when we go to friends' for dinner. Those ALWAYS go with the main course! :p

Re: need suggestions for a side dish?!?!?!
Fry up some sausages and when they are cooked cut into small pieces and put aside. Then in the same frying pan put in some onions that you have cut into small pieces and fry until they start to brown slightly then add to it a tin of tomatoes that you have wizzed with a blender. Add salt, pepper, (english mustard is optional), and a little pinch of oregano. Let cook until the sauce begins to thicken and bubble - making sure to stir every so often. Add the sausages to the sauce and cook on low for another 10 minutes.
This sauce is really versatile and can be eaten hot or cold with pasta, in vaulovant (sorry about the spelling) pastry case, or on mini toasts or crackers. Great to take to parties. |

Open a bag of green beans, pour into a casserole dish, season with Johnnys seasoning and sea salt.
Open a can of Campbells Mushroom soup, pour on top of the beans - add a little chicken stock and stir to coat the beans. Open a box of French's Fried onions with cheese :) sprinkle liberally over the cra...beans and place in hot oven. Cook till the beans have absorbed the goodness of the canned soup  Serve to very, very, hungry people. |
