A close shave!

I recall seeing somewhere that you shouldn't pull under an overpass if you're going to be hit by a tornado, something about the wind speed being faster.

Just seem some footage of the airport, you and your family are very lucky and I'm just glad you're all okay - not an experience I would want to go through myself.

That's one of your nine lives gone I'd say. I've been fairly close to tornadoes before but not as close as your experience. Once unknowingly took off in front of a waterspout down in FL which later hit the airport I'd just departed from as a tornado. That was scary enough.

I was flying USeless Air out of IND this morning and wondered why the flight was delayed until I saw the damage done in STL. They had to re-check all the passengers flying via STL onto my flight. That airport will be closed for quite a while by the looks of things.

Thankful that you and the family survived with your lives. I know how frightened I was in MS two weeks ago when we were under a tornado warning. The winds, rain and noise were horrendous but the tornado was west of us.

Wow. So Glad you are all ok. That must have been horrifying... We had our first Tornado *warning* in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and I was petrified.

Glad you're alright! We've had some close enough calls in the last 2 days, but nothing quite as bad as that! The past 2 nights have been long nights vigilantly watching weather reports as severe weather was coming in early in the morning. Multiple times we've had to hastily throw the cats in carriers and head to the basement. We had several 'hook echoes' approach us today, one only about 5miles away. Luckily no tornadoes touched down, but it was close enough.

We've had this shit close to us several times in the last 2 weeks and it's just plain getting effing old. Now we've got severe flooding the worst we've had in about 15years...and we're still expecting another 3-5inches of rain in the next few days.

Come on, Mother Nature, give us a f**king break already.

Thanks all, the thoughts are very much appreciated.

And yes, we were shitting ourselves, but strangely, not until after it was over. While it was going on, all I can remember thinking was to keep my wife's and kid's heads down as far as possible and that if we could hang on for 30 seconds it would all be over. But after it was over, my hands were shaking and I could barely walk.

I changed the tire while we were waiting so we could eventually get out. This morning I duct taped the headlight in and replaced the windshield wiper blades since the wind stripped the old ones right off the arms. Went by Sam's club today and had a new tire put on so I would have a spare. Kept the slashed one so I could show it to the insurance guy. Mechanically, it seems ok, but pretty much the whole driver's side is damaged from front to back.

I've heard the thing about overpasses now from a couple of people. I'm not sure if it made a difference or not, and I'm not sure that we could have avoided stopping under it actually. It just happened that we were right there when it hit.

No shit. We spent Tuesday night in a hotel because of the incoming storms. The fact that our entire mo-bile estate shakes when the washing machine agitates doesn't really encourage a restful night when the sirens are going off. I dunno what we're going to do about that though, can't afford to drop $70 bucks every time a storm comes in.

Ironic that we were looking forward to a weekend away from the storms.

Glad you are all okay. Bridges and underpasses are very dangerous places to be in a tornado!

There is no end to it is there. Glad that you have been bypassed by Mother Nature on the wind tunnel and hope that the floods don't come up to your doorstep.

I always thought that to be the safest place, well if you weren't in a shelter. I wonder why.... I mean I've seen a program where they were under an overpass (they got out of their vehicle and were up as far as they could go under the overpass. It seemed much safer than being out in open.
