Medium Rare

Twice now we've had restaurants refuse to serve us a burger any way other than "well done."

I don't usually participate in those "oh dear looks what's become of Britain" threads, but WTF?

Both told us it's illegal to serve burgers medium-rare. But I've since discovered that it's not illegal, just restaurant policy. Makes me wonder where they are getting their meat.

This is such a stupid country, filled with stupid people who learned customer service from watching Fawlty Towers.

Ground/minced meat is likely to be contaminated...therefore to guard against an E. coli and salmonella poisoning burgers should be thoroughly cooked ie not red or pink inside. What is stupid about that?

BTW what country are you referring to?

I don't eat anything made from ground/minced/preformed mystery meats...you don't know what parts of the animal are in there.

It's CYA for the restaurant, they don't want you coming back and suing them for getting sick from E-Coli. Much as I love a little pink I wouldn't eat a pink middle burger anymore.

Haha, reminds me of a dude I saw outside of Old Navy on Market street in San Francisco wearing a sandwich board that read 'THERE IS SHIT IN THE MEAT.' Oh dear.

BTW what country are you referring to?
Britain.

Exactly, CYA, but blame the 'nanny state' whilst you are doing it. Daft.

Bit like the pub in New York who refused to serve me a drink because I had already had two....and it was their responsibility to prevent me from getting drunk (on two small beers:confused:).

What a stupid country filled with stupid people:)

Just to be clear, you're saying Scotland is a stupid country, right? Or are you one of those are a 'proud Scot' when it suits?

Hang on though, if the restaurant made there own burgers whats wrong with a rare burger, when I make mine at home I like them a little pink, and quite a lot of people eat raw mince i.e. Steak Tartare.

It probably just means that they buy in $hitty frozen burgers therefore cannot account for whats in them :p

Bacteria lives on the outside of the meat...so when you've thoroughly cooked the outside of a steak for example you've killed the bacteria. If you mince the steak the bacteria on the outside is mixed in with the rest of the meat...that's the reason minced meat should be cooked thoroughly.

I wouldn't order a burger in a restaurant in the UK OR Australia, too often it's just frozen prepackaged crap in both countries.

Better to make it at home with good quality mince from your local butcher and cook it on the barbie.

These were both decent quality restaurants, and both stated that their beef was '100% angus' or something to that effect.

It's a good bet the kitchen staff were Aussies (aren't they all in Edinburgh?) So that might have been the problem.

And I refer to Scotland and/or Britain when I say this is a stupid country. If you are saying I can't be proud of my country and also be critical then you are on the side of George W.

Re: Medium Rare

OK well that is suspicious if they couldn't/wouldn't cook it to order....

I have never got sick from red meat, but I have caught campilobacter (sp?) off chicken, I can understand why they would want to cook the bugs off the chicken - but beef?

To be a country you must fit certain criteria. Scotland and for that matter, all parts of the UK, do not.
There are a few but a key one is you must have diplomatic recognition in other countries, ie an embassy.
Have you ever seen a Scottish embassy?

Sad though it may be we are all British;)

That reminds me of Mr Bean when he goes to that restaurant orders it and then tries to hide in in all different places (very funny) eventually the waiter accidentaly knocks into him and then they go and present him with a new one:lol::lol: The kids loved that one:thumbup:
