Back in the mid 80's my dad had a MkII GTI and that was a fantastic car too.

If he only knew how fast I got that thing to go ..... :-)

I know Americans that claim that American cars made in Canada or Mexico are not as high of quality as the same cars made in the US. I doubt they can back up their claim.
He was a VW nut. He was also a mechanic that worked at a dedicated VW garage (not a dealership) as his second job. He seemed convinced. VW seems to have a particular reputation here for electrical problems. I don't recall that being a particular problem back home so I guess there must be small differences between European and North American models.

The Passat is completely different, from the platform up.

I have 3 VWs on my driveway.

A 2005 Passat wagon
A VR6 CC
and a 2.5 Jetta.

Would I recommend them to friends, no.
They are great cars, but best you know how to throw a wrench, I service and repair all my cars.
Saves me a fortune.

Each have their issues. CC being the most well behaved so far.
Passat can be a pain. Timing belt snapped last year. It was a bad month.

It was the same with my Nissan 280Z and 300ZX. Both were fun (not as much fun as my TR-4A or 914 VW Porsche which were both very unreliable cars) but after a limited amount of mileage, they both started having reliability problems.

I would have recommend all 4 of the cars if someone wanted a fun car as long as they knew that they weren't getting a reliable Toyota.

What year was your 300ZX ?

I had an 84 as my first car when i moved over in 92. While I enjoyed it for 4 years it was by far the most costly one I have ever owned. However I really put that down to how it was treated by the previous owners and not with Nissan themselves. It really had a rough life before I got it but I needed a car quickly.

The 300ZX was a 1991. It was much more reliable than the 280Z and didn't have problems until much later than the 280Z but when it started having problems, it continued to have problems.

It quit being a fun car when front end went out of align and would shimmy at 65 mph but didn't shimmy above that. The garage did an alignment and I put on new tires but the problem remained.

That's weird. Perhaps one or more of the wheels were bent ?

I had a friend who had a early 90's model. He must have put about 200k miles on his before he finally sold it.

The kids got to play inside one of the Triumph's the other day and loved it...almost the right size for them

Someone let them play in a Ferrari last night which also wasn't bad, but had the weediest horn ever, even weedier than the one in my old Renault 11, which you had to hit the light switch for to use

While it's statistically irrelevant my 2013 GTI has 18,000 miles and no issues.
