that you are not given clean ones for each course. If so, let me be the first.

Lucky here as we only eat one course so never have to worry about things like that. Less to wash up after the meal is through.

you should do some overtime, so you have a bit more money, that way, you will not have to do the dishes when you can't pay the bill. :)

I draw the line at eating a hamburger with a fork and knife  Using a fork and knife the 'proper' way is one thing -- that said vive la difference ;) But there are foods that you just eat with your hands and hamburgers and roast chicken come to mind ... you just pck it up and eat it ffs

That bothers me too  It's just plain messy, if you ask me

The reuse of knives and forks bothers me.

Also, in resturants here, if one person finishes a meal before their companion, the plate is whipped away while the other person is still eating.

:oI can't remember if this happens in the UK :o

When it happens I just feel that it's rude, is that because all plates are left on the table in the UK until the last person has finished? or is it my imagination?

Again a difference of opinion. I prefer that they remove my finished plate as soon as I'm done with it. I can then sit back and enjoy speaking with the rest of my dinner companions while others are still enjoying their appetitzer or whatever. However, if it is just two diners, then I would prefer they wait until both are finished or have indicated that the plates should be removed.

Even with more than two I feel uncomfortable when they take a plate away its just a way of hurrying you along.

Appetizers are another matter though. At the end of the meal I dislike it very much!

Again, difference of opinion. You can tell your server your preference and dine in the manner you find most enjoyable, as can I by indicating to remove my plate when done.

I know  Meals are meant to be relaxed and it does seem like there is in an unseemly hurry sometimes. It's just that at smaller restaurants the waiters aren't hovering around anticipating your every need like at a formal dinner or the more posh restaurants. It can be equally annoying if you have to be looking around for a waiter to take your plate away because you've been done for quite awhile...

With the plates thing, I feel that it puts pressure on the diner still eating when the finished plates are removed by highlighting they are the last eating / holding people up.

Very rude and extremely annoying, to be honest :frown: I have found myself saying "I've not finished yet" because my plate was in danger of being snatched away before I was done

It feels rude to me so I think they do leave them in the UK. It feels like someone must be watching you like a hawk to snatch it away that quickly.

That isn't it. Servers clear plates as quickly as possible because Americans get pissy when dirty plates are left on the table for too long.

The problem is that most Americans don't use the universal signal for indicating that we're finished (laying the knife and fork together on the plate), so the servers have to ask. They aren't trying to rush you, at least not most of the time.

It never happened where I was waitressing in the UK. It was considered very rude.

Italians have a habit of remving plates when only one diner has finished and others haven't. Sometimes they will even come up and ask if you've finished when you haven't. That might also be because Italians often leave their knife and fork open on their plate and not closed together to signify "I have finished."

I thought that everyone ate that way till I really watched how most people use cutlery over here.
I was then thinking of the scene in "Kate and Leopold" where they are dining together, made sense of hop they were watching him eat.

:eek Oh no not this subject again.

Yup there are differences in the use of tableware. However, I have never seen many Americans mixing their foods on the same fork at one time and then shoveling it into their mouths. Now that seems like poor manners. Unless, of course, you are mixing your peas with your mashed potatoes :)

Every 6 months? There was a thread a few weeks ago.
