He is called Stephen and wants it to be pronounced the same as Steven as in Hawking, but he is getting it pronounced Stefan as in Edberg. Or maybe I missed his point totally....

Now when we got down to Gaiss, I got totally confused, and my confusion was only compounded further by Chinese first and last names, so now I'm going to sit in a darkened room with a large coffee till the pain stops

That was commonplace for me at work, particularly in the early days when we had to call ships on the radio telephone. Unfortunately I don't find it works well here, and need to revert to the local usage which seems to revolve either around either first names or fruit .....A for apple, D for David or whatever.....

It's that a little weird using your first name? That is almost a throw back to slavery days.

Let me try simpler words. I say "G for golf" and they hear "J". I say "F for freddie" and they hear "S". Geoff is pronounced exactly the same as Jeff.

I have the opposite problem.....our address includes "Pass" (Peter Andrew Stephen Steven) and when I spell it out, it invariably gets changed to "Path"

But then he said "St. Stephen" is not "St. Steven" so I thought there were three different possible pronunciations and thought he was referring to the way the first "e" was pronounced to differentiate between the "ph" and "f" sounnd.

I thought he meant in Christian contexts it is normally spelt with a ph, but pronounced with a v.....where tf did the OP go? He needs to come back and explain himself!

Well at least we turned a simple thread into a complex thread so it was not all for naught.:thumbsup:

At least we aren't talking about cars yet.

Oh I remember now. The one word with which I had the most difficulty spelling over the phone - FORT - as part of an address.
I would say to people 'Fort like in castle ' and sometimes they still wouldn't get it, so I would have to spell it.

Oh and to cap it all I seem to have acquired a middle initial (J, as in ox ;)).

Me to but I don't understand the 'ox'. It seems there is a telemarking company that sells information and their database can't handle a name without a middle initial since when I get unsolicited mail from a company that I've never dealt with, there is usually a "J" as the middle name.
